CD Review: Emissary: The Wretched Masquerade (Power Metal, 2022)

This band combines it's very strengths to bring on something like I've not heard in a longer time.

The cover already gives you food for thought about it's meaning.

The instruments of the US band feel like hey hold a talk to each other. It's all centered around the crunching riffs and the other musicians add, follow but sometimes also contrast to this. But it's far more than this.

It all stems of a power and passion for music that cannot be heard on every Compact Disc. Just take "In Solitude". It goes far deeper than the usual release. It fires a bunch of feelings towards the listener with it's rawness and power of riffs on the one hand while the other spreads emotions through the vocals and the ever changing drums.

It's great to hear the songs aren't set in long duration. They follow a compact route keeping the pressure and pureness intact. The album lives of it's ideas. Emissary often have a own way to write the material and that's what keeps me on the stereo.

The stuctures on songs like "Ruler Of Defiance" follow a unusual pattern and are filled with little snippets (means melodies of the guitar) and textures (raw riffs) not to be heard otherwise. It feels like the band created something on their very own.

The sound is loud and clear. I recommend not to hear the songs on a high level. You'll be able to enjoy all the efforts the band put in more with less volume. This record lives of it's contrasts of heavy music and the fine melodic vocals and melodies on the guitar.

"The Wretched Masquerade" is a all killer no filler release so it's well worth the purchase.

Grab a copy on CD or cassette directly out of the bands hands and have a teaser with the player below.

The band kindly still let's you download a second disc with old band demo's if you buy a CD copy.

Vinyl copies should be available at a later date.

Factory Of Art restart activities after 20 years

It's great to hear a band is coming back you didn't even knew before. This is what happened to me as I was introduced to the progressive Power Metal music of the german band Factory Of Art.

Factory Of Art bandshot taken at a liveshow.

Having sent me a Email with two linked YouTube videos I was blown away by "No tears" taken of the 2002 output "The Tempter".

It's music performed and composed like I had wished for in my mind. The riffs go a straight way and some keyboards in a lighter way set the basic for the mood of the song.

The drums powerfull and hard keep it straight forward so the progressive style never becomes too complicated and unstructured also this is surely not a easy pattern to perform. The drum sound is also great - it's held in a more dry tonality so it's good to follow.

But most of all the vocals left a lasting impression on me. They haunt you with it's spoken und darker tone and totally leave a emotional expression left behind in me. it's going under the skin as we are here in Germany going to say.

Happily it's not all past as the band is going to perform the next show in 2022 on the 10. December 2022 at Tonelli's in Leipzig (Germany).

In addition to that the guys are working on new material and the first four songs are said to be already finished with some guests who aren't revealed any closer yet.

In the meantime they are occasionally going to publish live videos of Factory of Art concerts from the past year to bridge the waiting time in an interesting way.

Make sure to keep a eye further on this great band. I can't believe I should have missed them in all the years before.

Evil Brain Taste crushes society's insanity with riff smasher

I think today's society suffers of it's complete overload in everything. There's so many things expecting us to click everywhere that we nearly forget what really counts.

Evil Brain Taste performing the newest single "Artithmophobia".

UK based thrashers Evil Brain Taste have brought this subject on point for me. The "Arithmophobia" video shows how much this civilisation has been downgraded that it's near to pure madness. Visualised with few elements everyone quickly knows that humanity needs to change.

The music side of the single presents a blasting riff monster that relentlessly pushes on forwards. It's labeled deathmetal by the band but feels more like a mixture of death and thrash metal elements to me. Various sections put itself into the mind of the listener and give it a positive push-up. Blasting vocals are raw and remind me a bit of Mille Petrozza of Kreator.

It's a taste of the album to come that is set for release in early 2023. Keep your ears and eyes open for twelve tracks of deathmetal fun shortly entitled "Number Two".

Just follow Evil Brain Taste through Bandcamp, Facebook or Instagram and share the video with your friends to help it spread all around.

Demo CD Review: Zubzero - Lost Sun (Thrash, 2022)

The flame has started to burn. As the cover already tells you this trash-filled silver disc spreads a lot of raw heat and melting metal.

The CD comes housed in a cardboard sleeve. The appeareance spreads warmth but also danger from all the splitter and flames spreading all around.

I love cardboard CDs like this one by zubzero.

I've carefully put the disc into my player and the display told me two tracks waited for me. What came out of the speakers? Track one "Lost" starts straight away wasting no time. The vocals and music present itself on midtempo pattern and with classic riffing.

The fine thing is that also it's a DIY demo the sound is professionell polished and great to enjoy. Vocals are rough and speaking of a traditional tone with song structures kept clear. But at times the riff is changed for variations yet this happens not too often. But when it does the ride becomes hefty and wild so the song shows a different face.

"Liquid Sun" is different straight from the start. It comes with more push and drive. The sound changes into a faster tone and keeps morphing the longer the song lasts. Few elements of progressive thrash shine through on this track. A solo fast and hard ends the music as quickly as it came.

Order a physical copy through the webshop of Big Bad Wolf Records and support the further development of a brand new band. I think it's a good pick for tradtional likers of the thrash genre.

You can follow "Zub Zero" on Facebook to see the next steps - for instance the upcoming gig with stoners Pander and Grinner (Alternative Hard R&R) on 3rd of December 2022 in Leeuwarden (Netherlands).

Rock Star movie song finally gets its proper release after 20 years

Do you still remember the movie "Rock Star"? It had one track in it that was especially remarkable. But somehow "We all die young" never had it's due since the song’s original version came out 9/11/01 and – along with all other songs with the word ‘Die’ in them – was shelved promotion-wise after the terrorist attacks.

Miljenko Matijević is the man who stands behind this track. He has performed as lead singer for the modern-day Doors and as the voice for the ‘fictional’ rock band Steel Dragon from the film Rock Star (starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston).

“We All Die Young” is the track that Wahlberg lip-synced in the film.

In addition to the lyric video made by 12 Inch Media, Miljenko is filming a performance video to be released soon, along with a special 360 Real Audio remix of “We All Die Young” via PeerTracks.

Matjević is also currently acting in a film inspired by his song “Trust In Love” – a song inspired by the division in the Korean peninsula that also speaks to the current Russia/Ukraine conflict.  The song has been released in English, Korean and Mandarin (Chinese), Spanish and Portuguese with a Hindi version on the way.

TRUST IN LOVE – the film - is about Mickey Ferrara’s record producing career going down the tubes, his estranged wife wants a divorce and his son is struggling with the reality that he is gay, but Mickey is a warrior, so he’s about to get in the trenches and Trust In Love to keep his family together.  The Mick Davis-directed feature also reunites Miljenko with Robby Krieger from The Doors who makes an appearance in the film.

2023 will see further touring from Steelheart and a number of re-recorded / remixed / remastered favorites from his catalog having new lives as singles from the Anniversary album.

Single Review: Not Another Prayer - Against the Wall (2022, Progressive Nu Metal)

Beware! This track comes kicking straight through your door. In fact I've hardly heard any band coming out of the speakers so clear and with full of energy.

The roughness at the beginning may feel a bit hard to take first but it fits to the lyrics, since I think we shall feel smashed to the wall first.

The band comments on the lyrics: "The lyrics talk about how we feel "against the wall" because of the restrictions, distorsions and discriminations of society, but we also invite the listener (and also ourselves) to wake up, because everything is falling apart and we need to stop it!"

A fine picture of the band Not Another Prayer.
But it's not just a rush of violent riffs all the way. The clou comes in after half of the duration is gone. The new offering changes it's side into a beautifull melancholic number letting us fly through a dreaming like atmosphere. A lot of work has been put in here you can easily hear with vocal effects and layers added to the wall of sound.

Finally the newest release pumps up some drive again but much less hard than in the beginning. It's more mid-tempo and feels great as a outro.

You can also listen to this song on Spotify.

Make sure to connect to the italian band. Where to will they go next ? How is the next release going to sound like ? I'm looking forward to see and hear.

Hear 'n Now supports Vocalist Steve Grimmett's surviving widow and family with free download

Vocalist Steve Grimmett passed away unexpectedly on August 15, 2022. Steve rose to fame in the early 80s with the NWoBHM band Grim Reaper. The band carried on in recent years touring worldwide and continuing to release music under his namesake, Steve Grimmett's Grim Reaper.

A GoFundMe Campaign has been organized to assist his surviving widow and family.

The Hear 'n Now project's first single, "No Road to Ruin" has been made available as a free digital download in an effort to encourage Heavy Metal fans everywhere to donate to the Steve Grimmett GoFundMe Campaign. You can pick up the song here.

The cover of "No road to ruin".

It is a great song that not only rocks out straight but also has a uplifting note in it. Steve Grimmett's vocal performance quickly sticked into my mind with his voice being present boldly in front and sometimes a little held in the backround.

The single has roughness and this typical 80's feeling in it at the proper moments when it sometimes feels as if the song could become a bit flat - you know it just get's a kick in with the refrain coming a little dirty.

It's also a fine track if you see the list of artists who joined the project. I'm sure you'll remember some of them you may have heard of some time ago but lost sight of. It's great to see them still being active in the music scene of today.

Mila Masu gives you fresh energy for a re-start

I don't think we had many bands with german lyrics here at the Underdogs. But this Punk Pop band based at Munich, Germany has turned my head from the start.

Pop Punk with a message. The cover says it already with one look.

It's the wild mixture of fun based and lighter guitars along with the drive of the drums that opened my ears so quickly.

But what totally flashed me are the vocals of Mila Masu. Her voice acting as a start to the song and to finish the track are almost unforgetable. The positive vibe continues as the song unfolds with constant lyric shots combined with the unconstant riffs firing around. The climax comes in once "Kopf Aus" drives towards the refrain. You feel that the power starts to gather and finally breaks out. I can imagine many people to dance along to this in clubs like Mila Masu does.

You can also listen to the music on Spotify if you like to hear it in better quality.

Lyrically the song talks about starting new things and breaking with old habits. It want's to show you how colorfull life can be once you go that way. The inspiration should give you power to re-define yourselves.

"Kopf Aus" is the third single the band released after already having already put out "Willst Du" and "Illegal". Make sure to keep a eye on them. The band's homepage has everything you need compiled at one place.

Blackie Lawless looks back on first W.A.S.P. shows after two and a half years

These days the live scene slowly starts to come back. But let's be careful, the worldwide pandemic ain't over yet so I'm afraid the coming months will be uncertain once and again.

But how does it feel on the artistic side to be off stage for so long? We were lucky enough to receive this text of Blackie Lawless, vocalist and bassist of W.A.S.P.
His thoughts and anecdotes are funny and scary at the same time. It's a longer read but I think many of you will maybe find some comfort in them knowing you're not alone out there with all of your problems.

"It was December 2019, Sao Paulo Brazil, the last time we set foot on any stage of any kind anywhere in the World. Little did any of us know this same "World" was about to dramatically change… for all of us!

At that time we were busy preparing for what was to be the “1984 To Headless” World Tour. In late January 2020 James Hetfield was premiering his Custom Car Collection at the Petersen Car Museum in L.A. and being a vintage “car guy” myself I was keen on going to check it out. There was a record amount of people attending the show. After taking pic’s with a lot of the people there and talking music and cars it all seemed a great time was had by all…. until about a week later. One week later I thought I had come down with the flu and was feeling pretty rotten for about 4-5 days, but then it got worse every day for about 4 more days. Each day seriously worse than the one before. I’d never had anything like this ever happen before. And then I lost all sense of taste and smell for about 10 days. This too had never happened before. So I fought it for about 9 weeks and slowly over the news we start hearing about this strange new illness that nobody really knows what it is. Fast forward a few months and find I’d unknowingly been selected to become a “Beta Tester” for this horrible new thing that didn’t yet even have a name.

Well everyone now knows how tragically it all played out all over the World. So let’s recap the last 2 1/2 years. One global pandemic, One serious worldwide recession with gas prices spinning out of sight, and a monster sitting in the Kremlin deciding now is his time to retake and remake the old Russian Empire.

Every single persons life was upended and quarantined into mass isolation with literally no where to go but sit and wait.

But slowly life, as resilient as it has always been, reared its bloodied head and pushed forward one more time.

So that brings us to Saturday night, July 23rd in Stockholm, Sweden. It’s now been 2 1/2 years since we stood and played in front of an audience. We were seriously concerned about actually getting there. With all the flight cancellations, moving a band and crew and gear is challenging in the best of times. But now there are nightmare scenarios going on out there right now with airlines. But the flight could not have been better and band and crew and gear all arrived safe and ready to make sound.

The longest break between shows I had ever done before in my life was a 3 year gap after touring the Crimson Idol in 92-93 and then to K.F.D. in 1996. But that was by design, this time it was not. But the funny thing was, when we got ready to do the rehearsals for the K.F.D. tour I had not played live or even been a rehearsal room with a band. I remember putting on the guitar for that first day of rehearsal and I thought, ’I have no idea how to do this anymore’. It was like I was in someone else’s body with no clue how to play much less try to sing. That whole first day it was like I was walking around bumping into walls and the simplest of things was like I’d never done it before. But the 2nd day I started getting the hang of it again and the muscle memory returned pretty quickly.

But although I expected it to be much the same as the K.F.D. rehearsals had been this time was totally different. Don’t ask me why. This time the first day in rehearsals I put on the guitar and said to the guy’s, ‘wow, this is the first time I’ve stood up with a strap on since Sao Paulo’. Meaning all the guitar playing I’d done during the pandemic was sitting down in a studio. But then I ran back in my head what I had just said. I thought. ‘I need to seriously rephrase that’ and I told them, ‘when I said I had not stood up with a strap on', it sounded like I said ‘I hadn’t stood up with a Strap-on since Sao Paulo’. Or sit down with one either for that matter. Talk about the ultimate Freudian Slip!

Everybody in the room fell over laughing and from that moment forward playing all the songs was joy like I had not experienced in many, many years. Even when we got out on stage in Stockholm and being still totally jet lagged it was joy. The thing I’ll remember the most was looking at peoples faces in the crowd. It’s something I’ve seen so many times before but this time it was different. I saw happiness I had not seen in a long, long time and I don’t think it was just me. What I believe I was seeing was a collective reaction by the everyone there and it was not like people who had been locked away for a long time, it was more of a collective sense of just joy.

That’s the best way I can describe it, just pure joy! I’m sure there’s a lot to be said about “absence makes the heart grow fonder” and I’m sure deep down on some phycological level we all knew it. And when I say “we” I mean the band and the whole audience. But that’s not what it looked like. It was almost like we were all doing it again for the first time and remembering what all those early shows we saw were all about.

I’ll take your faces with me for the rest of my life. And for that priceless gift…. Thank You Stockholm!

After the first show in Stockholm we felt pretty good. Considering we had not been on stage in 2 1/2 years it all went pretty smooth. I don’t care what anybody says, any Band, and I mean any Band, is going to feel that kind of hesitancy and apprehension after that long of a layoff. You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t feel that. But within just a song or two it was like we never left. The reviews were positive and the audience all seemed to dig it so we up and running once again.

I would like to take a moment to explain that these 2 shows, as well as they were received, were never meant to be a representation of what the upcoming tour is going to be. They were festivals and our intention was to treat them as such. The upcoming 40th Anniversary Tour will look, sound and feel different than anything we’ve ever done before. That’s not hype, THAT’S A FACT !

We’ve been working on this presentation for a while now and I give you my word, this will be different than any other Rock Show we’ve ever done. On that note, I can say it’s been a while since I was as excited about the elements of a show like what we’re going to do this Fall. For the two Sweden shows we did not want to reveal anything that’s going to be in this coming tour. I don’t wanna keep you in suspense, but I’m sure you understand and I promise it’ll be worth the wait. Personally I can’t wait to get into rehearsals for this new show.

The Skogsrojet Show was great. It was a little cold when we took the stage, but I like that because it’s way easier to perform when it’s cooler than being in a swampy sauna. It was also good to talk to some of the other Bands on the bill that we had not been able to run into in a long time.

And then came the trip home. We got off stage at 1 AM in the morning and had to leave for the airport at 5:30 AM. After a 2 hour ride back to the airport in Stockholm and an 11 hour plane ride, from the time we got up the day before and the combined trip, we had gone 37 hours with zero sleep before we got back to L.A.

It’s like Ray Charles used to say, “I don’t get paid for playing, I get paid for traveling!”. Truer words have never been spoken.

So Good Night Sweden - We’ll See You Next Year.

BUT - Look out America - Very Soon….We’re Coming to Hurt You!!"

Is this the best Heavy Metal song of the year?

Motorfinger in particular are a band from Norway and I think they will make a lot of waves with their heavy music strongely inspired by the 90s.

We're holding good cards also this one looks a bit scary.

Why? The first taste of the upcoming album is massively attracting with it's structure. It starts with the slow building of the track "Crawl".

It gives listeners time to sink into the music first. Once it's all set and done the vocals hit the scene and the rough and dirty organ surely opens many ears. It's the massive range that Daniel Garjá is able to perform that impresses me so much. I've not heard a new vocalist of that quality in a long time now.

But the party continues once it all comes to a climax at the refrain that's hard to wipe of the mind once tasted. The last part comes to fruition with the rough guitar solo that fit's to the dark tonality.

Finally the vocals take over again and the end comes fast leaving me behind with looking forward to what hopefully is yet to come.

Mist form a unique doom metal sound in anniversary video

Today a lot of videos and sounds are shared around the World Wide Web. But what I found in my inbox of slovenian all female doom metal band Mist really opened up my ears.

Mist are already around for ten years.

It's this in-depth sound that is composed of the direct sounding guitars, the constant pushing and permanent cymbal using drums in combination with the vocals that leave a mark, something that makes it stand out from all the others. The high vocals may sound a bit unusual but with every moment passing they fit in better.

I love the natural sounding production and the not-overloaded guitar sound. It's all constantly moving in a flow but at certain points leaves a moment to stop and take a breathe. The end is something even more special. The whole track changes it's pattern and also the visual presentation moves to a different point. Make sure to stay at the screen 'til the end.

»Altar Of You« is taken from the 2018 album »Free Me Of The Sun« (Soulseller Records). The album was recorded, produced and mixed by Benjamin Kic (Metalsteel) and mastered by Patrick W. Engel (Candlemass, Pentagram, Darkthrone, Exodus) at his Temple of Disharmony studio.

Supernaut hit the road tomorrow with fun riffhacker single

This is the sort of music that keeps me on the stereo. The stoner metal formation from the United States created a heavy riff that rocks straight through my ears. It's going agressively in but never misses to form something that remains listenable.

The cover reminds me a bit of computer game shells.

The drums accompany to the guitars and keep the groove tight and round. But what I liked most are the vocals on "Resist the urge". They have this legendary spirit in it. These direct vocals only pure underground bands have in them. They hit you direct in the face and keep it short and straight forward. No holding back, no overload just straight in to the noise. The lyrics accompany to this.

The overall sound is also like these thrash bands used to have them when they started out.

Make sure to listen to the full song 'till the end. The last third holds some nice play-around with more rough riffing that spread a lot of fun.

The brand new single comes packed in a nice sleeve that hopefully will see a T-Shirt release sometime.

Make sure to support this combo on the coming tour in the United States that already starts tomorrow! Here are the exact dates.

Single Review: Not Another Prayer - Vicious Circle (Progressive Nu Metal, 2022)

This band just started it's journey and the very first release already put's a spotlight on them.

Hour one has just begun at the Not Another Prayer camp.

What makes this release stand out? It's the fact that it builds up and rises throughout the long duration of over six minutes. In the beginning things are basic and more like you would expect of a Nu Metal band.

But as the time passes by new and more new elements fly in and add themselves to the sound of the Italian formation. These elements include a lot out of the progressive direction of music. They fit in well and are left off whenever the deeper Nu Metal style comes back.

Finally the whole package shows it's full power and starts a instrumental sonic rampage towards the end of the track. It leaves behind a listener that starts a second round to see how the song turns out this time...

...similar thoughts but the focus is more on the vocals which change and morph. The keyboards are a surprise at the last third of the release.

You can listen to the track on Spotify or directly here in the YouTube player.

I'll keep a eye on Not Another Prayer on Facebook or Instagram. Let's see how the mission continues...

CD Review: October Thorns - Circle Game (Deluxe Edition, Progmetal 2022)

This is the ultimate version of a legendary demo. It's faithfully re-stored and reworked to today's standards.

All of October Thorns work can be enjoyed on one CD now.

The listener get's to hear eight progmetal gems that are a blast. It's permanent powerfull playing power overwhelmed me. All the songs call out the full dedication and detail work anyone can imagine to be a trademark of this genre.

Sure it's progmetal all the way but there are elements woven into the sound that need to be discovered first. With every round you'll get to hear more of them. I think that's why it's nearly listenable infinite times because it takes much time to fully get into October Thorns sound. I myselves thought I had it all after just one walkthrough but having heard "Soul Forge" for a second time opened my eyes for all the detail work.

Of the studio songs the tracks Jihad and Soul Forge stand the strongest on my mind. Along with the title track I think they already show why a purchase of this disc is worth it. But the release as a whole wears this typical highlight feeling that comes to my mind of listening to progmetal. The power of the music along with all the memorable hooklines is hard to resist and pushes me everytime.

The bonus demo tracks show music that has been held back. Those songs are not fully produced of course but in good condition ayway. Thinner sound flows through the speakers but the power remains the same. I guess these tunes didn't fit to the others at the time of the demo release.

But they are great anyway. They just need more patience to be enjoyed compared to the first nine offerings on "Circle Game". They are not so straight-forward in terms of music but show a more experimental side of October Thorns.

The release comes with a detailed 20 page booklet. It holds the full lyrics to the album. There are plenty of photos showing the band at several phases of the existence at promotional shootings as well as a collage with many live shots of the shows the New Yorker played.

Finally a good batch of reviews reflects on the media echo the band got upon release of the demo and playing shows. They are presented with the original typo and media logos. Some reviews come as original pages taken of music magazines.

A all new interview with vocalist Paul LaPlaca offers a in-detail look into October Thorns art of creating decicated music and how the band came together and broke up.

Make sure to pick up a copy on the website of Divebomb Records. Fans of the genre get music for weeks to discover and enjoy in their ears and hands.

October Thorns is still active on Facebook these days.

EP Review: Hereafter - Fires Of The Flame (Groove Doom, 2022)

Mean vocals, tight riffs and great hooks on this EP.

A lot of fun awaits the listener.

Hereafter features vocalist Chris Natalini (former Blood Feast), drummer Mad T (Corners of Sanctuary), bassist Robert Bigler (Burned in Effigy) and guitarist/producer Mick Michaels (Corners of Sanctuary).

The riff fest starts out with the midtempo opener "Different Kind Of Something". It spreads a lighter vibe with a riff and tone that is a bit unusual. Anyway I like the way the vocals keep on a neutral way. The drums constantly follow the pattern and fit tight.

"I Can Feel The Power" continues where the opener left off but with a meaner attempt. Vocals come on a sharper note and the whole package has a more pushing and compact note. This is underlined by the constant repeat of the refrain that should be a fine verse to sing along to for the audience. A song that let's you quickly get into and enjoy is something I like a lot.

Next to go is the title track. The tempo is raised up and so does the straight and more heavier guitar play. Anyway it reflects on the heat of the cover so the pure and organic sound continues but with few guitar riff lines running out every here and there - this may surprise some listeners including me.

"Devil By Your Side" closes the mini album. It keeps the fast speed up and the vocals become meaner than ever before. The hall effect fits to the vocals. It keeps the old school flag flying high. Reminds me so much of the days I started to listen to metal music.

Make sure to listen to some fine tunes like in the days you began headbanging. The duration of the EP is short so it fits if you have few time to spare.

Have a quick overview with the YouTube player and listen to the full EP on a digital service of your choice.

A limited run of Compact Discs is available through a direct Paypal order. Your money helps the musicians to keep creating new music so it's well spent.

Album Review: Neocracy - Pure Organic (Emotional Rock, 2022)

The songs on the debut album of Neocracy speak of intensive feelings experienced in life.

The cover already says that something with feelings waits inside.

Besides the rough sound shell shines a face twisted in two parts. The female voice talks in a finetuned and fragile way about life while the growls may picture the darker depths and sides of our existence.

The same duality can be found in the instrumental colors. There are soft guitars to be heard all put at the proper moments. But the heavyness kicks always in at moments things may get to monotone. Sometimes percussion elements like on "Shallow Hearts" bring some change.

There are always moments when a surprise comes in. Listen to "Fate" and the clear part towards the end will surely raise your attention bar.

The guitars loop on the last moments - not to be heard that often. If you check out "Respect" closer the keyboards towards the end jumping through the music also add some extra taste to the already great meal.

My favorite is still "Sleep Awake" for it's very catchy way of building up and breaking down and the feelings shining so pure inside of the vocals. But the whole spectrum of feelings comes out throughout the duration of the album so please don't judge them for only this particular track.

The sound on the disc is very self produced. This comes with a good and a bad side. It holds the magic of the moment and prevents the rough and direct emotions from being taken away. But sometimes a bit more flat sounds would have made it a bit more comfortable to enjoy.

Anyway, it's still well worth to listen and purchase especially if you look for something going under your skin.

Contact the band on Bandcamp and Facebook if you want buy a copy of the album.

Album Review: Tony Martin - Thorns (Heavy Doom, 2022)

The new Tony Martin album holds several surprises. That was the first impression that I learned quickly as I streamed the new record.

Tony Martin offers a modern album with traditional undertones. Lots of surprises to be found on "Thorns".

It all already kicks off with the opener "As the world burns". It's a ultra-heavy track ripping it hard. Would you expect such a track after 15 years of silence ? Neither did I. Such a full yet fine and good listenable tune this particular one is. Expect power to the max.

"Black widow angel" holds the next bag of unexpected sounds. A midtempo and doomy grooving number. But in full contrast to this a very high vocal performance. Tony Martin still reaches high regions with his voice. Anyway this one is not easy to enjoy. It may feel a bit stressy to some people but sure it opens ears. I think it's not to be heard too often these days that such a mixture of sounds comes our way. A daring selection to be included on "Thorns".

And the next one will also keep listeners of unusual tunes heavily at the stereo. Once again the tempo is held low but it's more to give room for atmosphere. It's dark toned and coming in a more middle layered voice region. "Crying Wolf" starts out a bit balladesque way but few moments later progressive heavy moments come along.

The vocals are kept high and underline the extraordinary way, Tony Martin is able to perform in these days. The atmosphere goes up and down on this one and I think the fans will appreciate this track.

"Damned by You" continues in a more modern way with the band riffing and grooving in the background while the vocalist shares the vocals with his high notes - happily not all the time and more at the proper moments.

It's a great treat that a bit easier track follows. "No Shame At All" is far more light in every way. It's shorter, has a good riff anyway but can be enjoyed on the go also it's fine Rock music as well.

A ballad follows and shows that Tony Martin and his followers are able to perform to softer notes as well. A welcomed moment on the album to take a breathe and dream for some moments.

This is not the end, as already the eight track speeds and riffs up. The fun here comes from the various arrangements constantly changing groove, riffs, clear vocals and even growl passages. Three more songs are to be found on the disc and they are no fillers, too.

All in all it's a modern album providing heavy minds with great new content. Tony Martin has still a lot to offer in his voice and his songwriting abilities are great, too. The eleven tracks shown on "Thorns" are well worth a purchase.

The only downside are the high pitched vocals. They are great but can sometimes get a bit too much. Just check out "Run Like The Devil" and I think you'll agree.

The album is available digitally on all bigger streaming services and in a limited edition Digipak from Battlegod productions.

Demo Single Review: A Light Within - Terraform (Post Rock, 2022)

I think the new A Light Within demo single is going to surprise people who followed the band this far. The new material the band is currently working on will be released piece by piece as singles marked as "demos".

A Light Within open a new chapter with a demo single release.

Don't let this fool you. The quality is top notch there is nothing sounding bad or not outworked in this.

As I listened to the first installment called "Terraform" things overwhelmed me. A Light Within were well known to me for sticking to subtle and fine-tuned Post Rock sounds.

This new material comes around with brighter sound. It slightly blasts the ears with full sound tonality from the very start. I like the way the drums are presented this time. They are coming more to the point and sound thicker than before without destroying the structures.

But don't worry, the new noise isn't all just about change. It's also keeping tradition. It still has these vibe that incites your imagination. Sometimes it's a bit ghostly, other times it's a bit spacy. Other moments I had to think of space travel and maybe this is how things sound when you explore outer space.

Make sure to close your eyes once in a while and let your mind drift away. A Light Within have created sounds that help you to go to places unknown.

The vocals come further to the front and take more space and volume than ever before. Same goes for the melodies. They prefer to travel through the whole track duration. At the same time things morph and change so in the end there's change.

All in all it has become a more direct and content filled soundscape. Make sure to take a listen.

As a alternative you can also listen to "Terraform" on Spotify and maybe recommend it to your friends.

Follow the band's journey on socials such as Instagram or Twitter so you won't miss the next single releases.

Death To All on European Summer Tour 2022 - Ft. Gene Hoglan, Steve Di Giorgio, Bobby Koelble, Max Phelps

This isn't "just" a tribute band - it is a authentic way to experience the songs performed by the musicians that originally crafted them back in the day - with the exception of Chuck Schuldiner of course who passed away way to early in 2001.

It's good to see some sort of live performance is coming back to life. I think these intimate shows performed at European venues will be a welcomed chance of enjoying some release of the pressure that has been build up in recent times. In addition you may also enjoy some breathtaking technical experience as some timing may feel impossible.

Death To All's European Summer Tour 2022  kicks off on June 11th in Germany. See the show dates in the flyer.

Tickets at https://reversedrecords.com/death-to-all

Tape Review: Final Coil - Somnambulant II (Alternative Prog, 2021)

Maybe you know this feeling of living in uncertainness. You search and search for answers but don't know where to turn to. Music has often shown me a way.

The cover of Somnambulant II reminds me of old black/white movies.

The newest output of UK based alternative progressive musicians Final Coil speaks out of a deep state of emotionality.

In contrast to the more heavier second full length album (The World That We Leave Behind For Others) the band released in 2019 this new EP comes in a far more sensible tonality to the listener.

It's all set in a sounshell that points to a more finetuned look on the inside of a person. To me it speaks like being on a spiritual journey to yourselves. This may sound like it's all just soft toned music but in fact it's not. Already track three"Waste Yr Time (Quills & Trees)" comes also with rougher moments that mix in some heavy distortion at the proper points.

My favorite comes with "Lost Hope (Trip)", a song adding dreaming elements to a midtempo rhythm on a step by step basis.

While most of the songs follow the typical song structures the band (hopefully) is now known for the new Somnambulant EP also holds some surprises. Make sure to decide before reading on - spoilers will ruin the fun of listening the first time.

"Convinction (Industrial Slaughter)" for instance shows a more chaotic psyched playing around with electronic effects and vocal experiments.

There's also a ballad to be found on this release. "Imaginary Trip (Still)" offers what the song name promises but in a slow and fined tuned way.

Somnambulant II is a journey like no other one before. It feels frail and dark but at times is also makes me dreaming and uplifting.

I feel well in this world. I feel understood by the music of Final Coil.

Please check out Final Coil's newest songs here and consider a purchase as a download. It's also available on cassette tape in a Maltese Cross packaging for just one more buck compared to the digital copy.

Single Review: Wicked Smile - Daze Of Delirium (Heavy Rock, 2022)

When it comes to playing Metal music that could be used on a party many bands often use cliché lyrics. It surely fits to the mood and is surely easier to write but it misses out a chance of talking about something important.

The cover art of Wicked Smiles single comes as a unique photography.

Heavy Rockers Wicked Smile from Australia don't go this route. The topics featured on the debut "Wait for the night" have a range from civil unrest, bullying up to mental health.

The newest single is set as a bold stomping track. After a short guitar introducer the music begins it's heart beating work. It quickly becomes evident that the song calls to have a good time.

Anyway it's not that easy to come by. The vocals go a direct line in the verses but start to splitter up in the refrain. The guitars follow this path like as if they crack up from time to time. It offers a more abrasive side but makes the listener having more and more rounds to get through it. It plays around with the riff which hangs in my mind afterwards.

This hardly comes as a surprise once you know that lead vocalist Danny Cecati (ex Pegazus & Eyefear) stands behind the microphone while Stevie Janevski and Dave Graham are to be heard on guitars. It has a good duration - not too long but also not too short so it's good to enjoy.

What's coming up next ?  The boys have announced an upcoming headline tour of the United Kingdom in November, where they will also perform at renowned festivals such as Hard Rock Hell and Winter Storm.

Wicked Smile were also recently added to the Silverback Touring roster where the boys have an upcoming Australia wide December tour with rock legends Skid Row.

Make sure to connect with them through Facebook to hold the line.

Scars and Guitars Volume 1 let's you be part of a interview

Here's a little Ebook recommendation for all of you out there who like me have a passion for reading interviews with musicians. People creating the music we all love often have a lot to say. Not only about the art they create but also about the way they live, the way life happens to them or what they have experienced and overcome in all of these times. These conversations often feel to me as if we're often passing similar stations ins life.

Contained within the pages of Scars and Guitars, Volume 1, you’ll discover thoughts and recollections from conversations with over 90 podcast guests of Andrew McKaysmith.

You’ll read excerpts from conversations with the members of bands playing their trade under the broader banners of rock, classic rock, heavy metal, industrial, death metal, black metal, deathcore, thrash metal, punk, and reggae, featuring musicians as diverse as Michael Schenker (MSG/ Scorpions), Don Felder (Eagles), Erik Danielsson (Watain) Phil Campbell (Motörhead), Al Di Meola, Adam Darski AKA Nergal (Behemoth/ Me and That Man), George Lynch (Dokken) as well as bumper entries featuring conversations with the members of Morbid Angel, Anthrax, Megadeth, Napalm Death, Testament, Corrosion of Conformity, and Cradle of Filth, to name just a few.

The value in Scars and Guitars, Volume 1, is the sense that, as a reader, you are now a part of the conversation. Andrew has a knack for allowing the person he is talking to feel at ease, which is how he obtains deep insight into their thoughts and feelings. As you read through the book’s many entries, you’ll feel as though you were there, an observer at the time of the conversation.

I've just checked out little potions of the book and it's amazing to see that it works. It feels more as if you were directly transfered to the place of the interview and experienced the whole scene for yourselves.

Have a look into some sample of the books at the trader of your trust.

Single Review: Leatherjacks - Baby Hit and Run (Rock 'n' Roll, 2022)

The times we're living in look a bit dark. But music helps us to get through all of this. The new Leatherjacks single is a wave of pure rocking out for the Rock 'n' Roll fun to me.

The Jackers made some progress with the release of a new single.

Having followed the band project for some time now the Brazilians have made a strong movement from basic rockers on to more experienced one's. The highlight came to me as the "Extremely Dangerous" album surfaced. It showed that they were able to get on point more than ever with more compact songs that riffed a lot.

These days the newest release flies to us as a digital single. In the beginning it all starts with pureness and attracts with it's simplicity. The rush of good feelings already shines in here. But something else is also present.

It's a progression in songwriting. The music builds up more clever, showing more twists and quickly makes it clear that it's not as simple as it felt in the beginning. It's not predictable where the rocker goes next and that points to the next evolutionary step the Leaterjacks made with this release.

The guitars have been added a technical level. They are set to go faster than ever, taking more various shapes and showing the whole ability that the Fretboard offers. You can hear that the more intensive music comes slightly multi-layered every here and there (for example the bridge towards the refrain).

"Baby Hit and Run" can be heard more than just one time. To get into all the details more rounds are needed.

Make sure to tune in here or check your preferred streaming platform. It's well worth it.

Finally follow the Jackers on Facebook so you won't miss out on further releases.

EP Review: The Great Lie - Burners (Hardcore/Punk, 2022)

Life is short. The Great Lie seem to have used this saying and put together a EP that goes straight to the meat.

The New York based band put's out a open stylistic EP called Burners.

It's main ingredient is a strong basis of heavyness. The tight drums and guitar sections make sure it all sticks rough and dirty together.

From it's stylistic "Burners" is a open release taking advantage of many styles of the heavy music genre. You can spot potions of Hardcore, Punk, Thrash and Metal all the way. The band makes sure the journey never becomes monotone because the five short tracks (the longest one is three minutes in duration) quickly change from one part to another.

My favorite is the opener "Amputee" with it's change between vocals that stand alone in some moments and other segments where the rest of the band pushes in with all of it's sheer power bringing the whole song into a rush of fury.

Partly It feels a bit like progressive Metal to me when I listen to the music on this EP. The dry production adds to this feeling. Happily the songs are very straight forward (just listen to "Winters Death") so things never become too complicated to follow.

You can pickup the digital release at a price of your choice from Bandcamp. As a alternative "Burners" can be added and listened to on Spotify. Please add them to your playlists so your friends can check them out, too.

Finally Facebook will help you to keep on track how the story of the band evolves further.

Single Review: Marc Vanderberg - Break Free (Hard Rock, 2022)

I think we all live more or less under circumstances that we like and dislike. Sometimes I'd like to break free from all of the bad sides of my existence.

Music helps me to stick to my life and continue also many obstacles are on the way. The best example of a song that helps is the brand new single of german guitarist and songwriter Marc Vanderberg called "Break Free".

Like in the old days: music provided on a cassette tape.

It all starts out with the hammond sounds shining in at the very beginning and further at different sections of the song. They send a positive basic note my way. But it all starts to fully kick in with a drum roll and the rest of the band joining the party.

Vocalist Jimmy Gee first comes into play with some longer spoken words. Quickly he opens up his organ to the full range and spreads his energetic performance giving the track a "fight on!" touch I love so much.

The vocals stick the most into the mind. They are worked out a lot (most of all the big refrain). Gospel vocals that have been worked in also help to pump up the air with a more powerfull feeling.

Finally it's time for some guitar solo experience but it's held close to the song style so it doesn't get lost at some point.

Make sure to listen for yourselves to this classic Hard Rocker. It's available on all major download and streaming platforms from February 18, 2022.

Keep a eye on Marc Vandeberg's Facebook page for further updates.

All Depraved take a stand against bullying

Bullying someone is no fun. It hurts the person heavily inside. You can see no scars because it's all "just words" that have damaged someone so bad.

I'm sure a lot of people in today's society suffer psychological problems caused by bullying. It's such a bad thing that needs to be spoken of far more in public and most of all removed.

The All Depraved put out a song with a important subject.

I'm glad thrashers All Depraved picked up this topic and put out a song with a proper title. People who commit bullying really "Don't care what's wrong or right" anymore. I hope this song helps to make more people sensible that this is a serious problem.

If you see someone who is affected by this please them. Show courage and don't look away - fight against bullying!

Musically it's packed in a fat riff that spreads a lot of positive up-powering energy. You can hear the fun the musicians transport with their performance. I think they had a lot of fun putting the song together. Throughout all the heavyness you'll spot lighter moments that let the song breathe and prevent it from becoming monotone or overloaded in just one style.

Make sure to follow the band on Facebook. I'm sure they will have to say a lot more in the future.

Interview with Norman Skinner (Vocalist of Niviane, 2021)

Norman Skinner came to my attention the first time as I listened to Niviane's album "The Druid King". I liked the power of the voice also the songs felt a bit overloaded to me. The powermetal band left my attention but some time later the "The Rutheless Divine" album knocked at my door and the far more straight forward and direct sound brought me back to them.

Around the same time I found out that Norman Skinner also performs in several other band's and projects so I thought it would be great to have a short talk with him. He gave us a very first insight into the upcoming albums of Niviane as well as his Elemantis project. We also go back to the very beginnings and talk about his very first steps into the music (very cool story, I think I never got such a great response before).

Norman Skinner is able to sing on a wide range.

Heavy Metal Underdogs: How did you start out with singing ?

Norman Skinner: It was actually by complete accident. I had friends that were going to play the high school talent show. They weren't an actual band, just a group of guys jamming for this one show. A couple weeks before the show their singer bailed on them and I just happened to be the guy that was hanging around. I had never sang before and I believe they asked me out of desperation and\or convenience. I was always up for a good adventure so I agreed and was hooked ever since.

You are active in many bands and projects. How do you manage to keep your voice in good condition ?

The fact I am and always have been involved in multiple projects helps to keep my voice conditioned. I am always singing & recording so it stays nice and strong.

How do you pick the topics for the lyrics you write ?

It is completely random. I gather inspiration from movies & TV, history & mythology, personal experience & situations\observations of those around me. I never go into writing a song with an idea of what it will be about. I 1st hear the music and discover the mood it sets and go from there.

How would you describe the evolution of Nivianes sound between the album "The Druid King" and the second output "The ruthless divine" ?

The Druid King was mainly composed of music written by the individual members prior to the band being formed with the exception of 1 or 2 tracks. I took those tracks and put melodies & lyrics to them. The band was still finding our collaborative sound on that album. The Ruthless Divine has a much more cohesive sound which is also more technical and overall heavier. The 1st album was a nice out of the gate effort and production-wise sounded more polished and the new album was more modern sounding.

A new Niviane album is currently in the works. What can the fans expect of the new material ?

Yes, we are working on the details of the last 3 songs before we enter the studio next month to track drums for an untitled 3rd album. Fans can expect more of the same in terms of style. The heaviness is still there as well as the dynamics our fans have grown accustomed to. We did however try to concentrate on the chorus hooks a bit more this time around.

Can you give us any closer idea on how Norman Skinners Elemantis could sound like once it's out ?

The Elemantis project is a very diverse project in terms of sound. It really combines Symphonic Metal w\Traditional & Power Metal. 22 track concept album with a lot of guest musicians & vocalists. The songs range from acoustic ballads to heavy driving tracks and everything in between.

Listen to Norman's performance on a Niviane track called "Crown of Thorns".
