Chris Poland to play Megadeth classics at Induction into Metal Hall of Fame 2020

Happy new year! 2020 starts with a bang of a event. Chris Poland will perform some Megadeth classics at his own induction ceremony into the Metal Hall of Fame. I think this is one of the rare chances to hear tracks of "Killing is my business" and "Peace Sells" with the legendary guitar player in a live version.

Chris Poland will be inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame 2020, Picture Credit: Melody Myers.
The non-profit charity Gala takes place on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Marriott Delta Garden Grove in Anaheim, CA.

Proceeds go to bringing free therapy services to special needs children at specific health facilities and community centers throughout the United States.

Geoff Tate, Don Dokken, Stephen Pearcy, Graham Bonnet, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Metal Church will be joining Chris Poland in person as 2020 Metal Hall of Fame Inductees. Various bands and Inductees will be performing as well.

The Gala will be hosted by iconic television and radio personality Eddie Trunk, and co-hosted by Whiskey A GOGO Ultimate Jam Night / Almost Fama Show Host Jes Fama.

Poland will also be performing Megadeth classics live at the Gala with special guests Thöm Häzäert, vocalist for Megadeth bassist David Ellefson's eponyous solo project, who performed vocals and co-produced Ellefson's recently released debut release 'Sleeping Giants', (including the hit Metal radio track "Hammer (Comes Down)", which also features a guest appearance from Poland, along with Mark Tremonti), and guitarist Dave Sharpe and drummer Opus Lawrence of Dead By Wednesday, who also recently toured with, and performed on the Megacruise, as part of Ellefson's "Sleeping Giants" backing band, and appear on the 'Sleeping Giants' track "Vultures".

Tickets: 45.00 at the door / 35.00 in advance.

Medevil stream full album for limited time only

If you've read my article about Medevil's video "Nightwalker" you probably know about the band's qualities. Don't worry if you missed it out. You're still in for a treat.

Photo Credit - Kevin Eisenlord,  L-R - Eric Wesa (Bass/Backup Vocals), Ross Collingwood (Drums), Liam Collingwood (Vocals), Gary Cordsen (Lead Guitar), Brett Gibbs (Rhythm Guitar)
A little dream has come true for me with this band. Medevil capture all the things I love so much about metal. They combine elements of the best oldschool bands like Metal Church when it comes to the riffs, add the songwriting abilities of Iron Maiden and put in vocals that Udo Dirkschneider couldn't have layed down better on tape.

I guess many of you out there that have heard and seen the video can't wait to hear the full thing. Happily we are in luck and I can share a stream of the full "Conductor of Storms" record as a stream right here. But seize the opportunity. It will be up for a limited time only (from Aug 26-Sept 9).

If you like what you hear you can order a copy of the album over at medevilmusic.com or catch the band on the road in Canada these days (and maybe pick up a copy of the CD directly at the show).

Tourdates

Aug 28 - Chilliwack, BC - Main Street Night Club
Sept 5 - Kelowna, BC - Muninn's Post
Sept 8 - Calgary, AB - Verns
Sept 9 - Edmonton, AB - DV8
Sept 10 - Calgary, AB - Overtime Sports Bar

I'm sure this is a band we're going to see and hear of a lot in the coming years. I hope for that. Make sure to follow them via Facebook or Twitter.

Medevil mix thrash of the 80's with classic metal and razorsharp vocals

Today it is more than ever a exciting time that see's a lot of new bands emerging that are offering a wide variation of styles, influences and mixes. Today's metal scene has become more diverse and colourful than ever in my eyes offering a bandwith like never before. It's like the best is yet to come so we all should do our best so the metal scene can continue to evolve and survive and bring us all the music we love and need.

So how would it sound like if you mix up elements of old thrash classics of Metal Church, comine them with a songwriting attempt in a style of old Iron Maiden albums and round it all out with raw vocals reminiscent of Udo Dirkschneider? Well, Medevil is the answer in my ears. The new album of them is straight around the corner and set for release on 26th August 2016. In support of the release the band has set up three tracks as a prelisten and I'd like you to check out their newest video of the track "Nightwalk" which is the opening track of the record. You can pre-order the album "Conductor Of Storms" through the band's website.
You can find the other songs on the Youtube channel of Medevil.

Medevil will play some shows these year. See the flyer below for the exact dates and the album cover.

CD Review: Sanktuary - Winter's Doom (2016)

Short Introduction

Power thrashers Sanktuary greet from the harsh and blisteringly cold of the deep far North of Canada's Yukon Territory situating themselves in the city of Whitehorse. They have been trekking across the country for the past 6 years to bring their fierce and dynamic high speed riffs, catchy hooks, and belted out lyrics to the metal crowds.

A collective vision that began in high school with a group of like-minded teens fed up with the constraints of mainstream music who wanted to emulate the lifestyles of their favourite bands. Their straight-forward, no-bullshit attitudes shape their signature brand of heavy metal, which has led them to release the full length, 2013's 'Something Fierce' that reached #19 on the national college radio loud charts, 2011's 'Tundrastruck' split with Nova Scotia’s Black Moor and Montreal's Metallian plus two EPs 2010's 'Black Magic' and 2009's self-titled.

2016 see the band's return with their new album 'Winter's Doom' set for release on January 22nd, 2016.

The cover for "Winter's Doom", (c) Sanktuary, used with kind permission

Summary

If you keep holding on to the thrash metal classics of the likes of Metal Church or Exciter then this album is for you. It feels far less calculated and overproduced like a lot of thrash metal albums sound these days. That's what came to my mind when I listened to the record. The cool thing is that it brings back the fun of the old days.

For instance there is this remarkable power drumming on the album. It's what has always pushed and kicked me when I listened to Metal Church and I love it so much. The vocals shout it out short and loud, it comes directly from the heart. Finally the six- and four-strings all give their raw and powerfull sound that will make you bang your head all the time. It's these crushing riffs that blast the way all through the record not waiting for just a single second but always heading on forward, never looking back all just going for the next riff and blast. You'll love to listen to Sanktuary once you do.

If you prefer thrash of the dirty, hard and old times don't miss out this great record. It's a 2016 record but you'll feel as if the good old times never passed you by. Finally a band that doesn't give in to the all-to-modern stuff but instead kicks it out loud, hard and with attitude and much power. You can feel that this is handmade, no electronics or overproduced stuff in here. Just 100 percent pure great old-school thrash all the way!

Album overview

Then there is this going straight forwards attitude on the songs. There's no holding back, the band goes directly all on it. This said it doesn't mean there is no diversity on the album. Actually it's way around. "Winter's Doom" features eight tracks that are different from each other. I'll pick out some highlights right here to give you a little idea of what to expect of the album.

The second track "Wild Is The Wind" exactly stand's for what you would expect of it from the song title. It goes out vicious and wild with a midtempo song structure that is surrounded of hard-hitting riffs and a refrain that won't leave you sitting silently on your chair. It call's out "Let's do it, let's have it people".

L-R: Anders Grasholm - Drums | Cole Hume - Bass | Alan Binger - Vocals, Guitar | Glen Emond - Guitar, (c) Sanktuary, used with kind permission

After this storm the band changes and shows a different side of their musical abilities. "Curse Of The Vermin" starts out with a slow, old-school like intro. The following rhythm is a mixture of the midtempo and highspeed drumming completed with more complex riff structures and the vocals keeping it much sharper, shorter and harder. With a duration of around seven minutes this one is the longest numbers of the record.

The title track "Winter's Doom" kicks you to yet another side. One of my favorite tracks of the record. A fast paced riff hacker going straight all on it. Then there is this section where the band let's the guitars burn for a while just to go over to a more melodic classic part rounded out with sharp-sounding solo's  "Corpse Blockade" deserves a mention. A full-fun track with a great scream-along chorus with it. I think you'll love this once you've heard it.

Player and Purchase-Link

Since the album is yet to come (release date is January 22nd 2016) there isn't a full stream out yet. If the band will set up a album stream I'll add it here of course. So far two tracks are available out there. One of them is the opener "Space Race" which you can listen below. The second single "Corpse Blockade" is exclusively up for listening on the website of PureGrainAudio. These guys also offer you a free download of the track so don't miss out your chance to pick up a free copy of that song.

Update 2016/01/22: Today is the day! The band has set up a full album stream. Enjoy this great thrash album.

Update 2016/01/19: A few days before the album release metal-rules.com has been given the honour to stream the full record in advance, so just head over to listen to the brand new Sanktuary on their website.

Update 2016/01/08: The website Metal Snob has premiered the album track "Vermin Lord" on their site as stream. They also have a giveaway contest up and running where you can win one of two copies of the album. All you need to do is to make a proper picture of yourselves showing you as a mighty warrior from the grim darkness of the frozen north.

The album is up for pre-order through the band's Bandcamp page. It's fairly piced at just 4,99 CAD for the high-quality download or a few bucks more (6,99 CAD plus shipping and handling) for a copy on a silver disc. Please support such great guys and pick up a copy. Bands depend upon the support from the fan's so there's nothing better than handing over some money for all the fun they provide (life wouldn't be bearable for me without music from bands like this one).

If you wanna keep a eye upon the band don't forget to like them on Facebook.

Power Thrashers Sanktuary start Space Race to the upcoming album

The thing that always keeps me coming back to Thrash Metal music is the fact that it doesn't fiddle around too much. It goes straight to the point and keeps pushing on forward very, very heavy. It doesn't stop nor does it look back, it just pushes on straight forward all the time and that's a great feeling. There nothing more frustrating than being stuck somewhere.

The band Sanktuary provides us with this power to move on. The band who is located in the harsh and blisteringly cold of the deep far North of Canada's Yukon Territory situating themselves in the city of Whitehorse is currently preparing the release of their their new self-release album 'Winter's Doom'  on January 22, 2016.

(c) by Sanktuary, used with kind permission
This first full track of the record entitled "Space Race" should give you a positive push of power to move on in your life. To me it reminded me a lot of the old 80's charme albums of Exciter or Metal Church had mixed up with today's songwriting structures of band's such as Evile. Enjoy. :-)

The full album will feature seven killer high speed, breakneck thrash metal tracks inspired by the Yukon's far North they call home along with other issues such as politics, technology, etc..

As the band points out about the first single Space Race: "It's about... the race to space! Superior technology, more advanced weapons, a more modern cold war kind of feel."

Metal Church release first rough mix snippet of Suffer Fools

Currently Metal Church are working on a new album that is anticipated to be released in fall this year. Some days ago I posted a audio stream from youtube that featured a re-recorded version of the classic "Badlands".

It showed that Mike Howe is still laying it down heavy on the vocals these days, something that is not certain after so many years in between. But what does this mean for the new record? How has his voice developed and overall: how does the fresh material sound like? Well, you can judge for yourselfs from the small but very fine snippet below that the band released via Facebook.

As for me I can only say: Great snippet from the upcoming album! Like the variations Mike Howe puts inside the vocals very much. Plus the song so far reveals as a midtempo stomping track, something not too many Metal Church songs came along with. All in all things remind me of "The human factor" so far. I'll keep a eye on this for sure.

Metal Church post 2015 version of Badlands

Not too long ago Metal Church announced that vocalist Mike Howe returned to the band. A sensation in my eyes since I always loved his vocal performance a lot on albums like The Human Factor, Blessings in disguise or the Hanging in the balance album.

Now the band has released a re-recorded and also slightly re-worked version of their classic "Badlands" on their Facebook page. The track means a lot to me and this new recorded version does justice to it. The production is hard and dry and I love it for being this way. It comes in direct, just as if played live. This one is setting me on fire. A new album is in the makings and announced for fall 2015.

This is the exact description that is attached to the audio stream for all those of you who'd like to know more about the details of this one:

Metal Church “Badlands 2015” mixed by Chris “The Wizard” Collier. Recorded - June 2015. Featuring Mike Howe (vox), Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar), Jeff Plate (drums), Steve Unger (bass) and Rick Van Zandt (lead guitar) New album coming Fall 2015 on Rat Pak Records.

Short Round Up: Iron Maiden Livestream plus new songs from Metal Church and Scanner

Shortly before this week passes I'd like you to introduce you to three news I've recently been running across by surfing through the web.

First of, Iron Maiden announced that their show from Rock In Rio will be streamed for free through youtube. The band wrote on facebook: "Maiden headline ROCK IN RIO on Sunday... and everyone can watch online! Maiden hit the stage at about midnight Rio time and the YouTube link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEEcvj6X_h4
So make sure to check back for the proper time that fits your country and don't forget to set the alert of your clocks if needed so you won't miss out this one.

The next topic covers thrash legends Metal Church who recently came back for a reunion. The big surprise is that they have already put together a brand new record entitled "Generation nothing", that is set for release on October 22, 2013. The album will be available in a wide variety of formats, one of them also including a personal thank you call by Kurdt Vanderhoof himself! Check out the cover and all the available formats on the bands website. The tracklist of the album will be:

1. BULLET PROOF
2. DEAD CITY
3. GENERATION NOTHING
4. NOISES IN THE WALL
5. JUMP THE GUN
6. SUICIETY
7. SCREAM
8. HITS KEEP COMIN’
9. CLOSE TO THE BONE
10. THE MEDIA HORSE

Kindly the band already released one full song of the new album to be heard through soundcloud and it's a total killer song in my eyes. Never thought they would go back to that direct heavy and brutal style. But check it out for yourselfs here is "Scream":

Update 2013/09/25: The band has released the title track for the upcoming CD via Soundcloud. It's a midtempo song with a melodic refrain but check it out for yourselves:

Let's close this little round-up with the Scanner, one of my very personal faves. A very melodic speedmetal band set in the same style that Helloween has been in in their very early stages. After some years of silence the band finally is going to put out a new record called "The Judgement" and have set one rough mix up on their facebook site as a pre-listening item. Go on and enjoy the track "The race" below in it's direct and early sound format:

Headbangers Open Air 2013

www.headbangers-open-air.de

Finally spring see's the day of light here in germany. With the sun coming out and the temperature rising I guess a lot of you people out there will think about the upcoming festival season with the chance to hear our beloved music under a open sky along with sharing this moments with other people that have
the same taste of music.

Besides the bigger and well known festival's out there we saw in recent years happily a coming up of festivals of a much smaller style often featuring young and new bands or smaller and not so well known bands. One of 'em just came to my attention through a friend of mine. I'm talking about the Headbanger's Open Air near Hamburg, Germany (exactly in in 25364 Brande) that will take place between 25th of July up to 27th of July 2013.

Why did it got my attention? It's a small festival focussing on providing you with great music but without all of the bigger bands to keep the ticket price as low as possible. The sensation in my eyes is that you only have to pay 48 Euro to be able to go in. These includes presale, camping directly at your car/van and the possibility to see all of the bands!

Nevertheless they managed to confirm Overkill, Metal Church, Vicious Rumors, Praying Mantis, Demon, Iron Saviour, Kissin' Dynamiteand Forte for 2013's festival line-up. These bands are the more known bands. Besides that a bunch of upcoming bands will add to the event such as Game Over, King Leoric or Heretic.

You can get your ticket and all additional information for the festival on the website. If you like stay some more time on the festival, then you might be happy to read that there's even a Warm up party organised on 24th July as well as a Aftershow Party on 28th July 2013. Sounds like this one could turn out to be quite a nice event in 2013 :-).

Metal Church to reunite at 70.000 tons of metal festival

The legendary U.S. thrash metal band Metal Church will reunite at two shows of the upcoming 70.000 tons of metal festival (Jan. 28th - Feb. 1th 2013 at Miami, Florida)! This sensation has recently been announced at the official festival website and the announcement can also be found by now at the official site of the band.. The line-up will be: Ronny Munroe on vocals, Kurdt Vanderhoof and Jay Reynolds on guitars, Steve Unger on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums.

For one of their two shows on board, they will play their debut album, "Metal Church", in its entirety. The other show will be a "greatest-hits" set. The band will give the fans the opportunity to vote for this greatest-hits setlist. Details on how to vote will be announced soon.

I recall having them first seen on a VHS magazine called "Metal XS Vol. 1". It was a old-school VHS tape that you could buy back in the 90's when youtube and the like weren't around yet. It was besides magazines the only way to stay updated on news of the metal-scene as well as to see interview footage and even moreover to see videoclips the bands produced to promote their albums. There were also TV shows like Headbangers Ball, Hard 'n Heavy but they were shown at silly times you could never watch.

So I saw that interview with the band and the videoclip for "Badlands" which totally rocked. The song is sort of a bit more melodic songs but has a quite raw and powerfull ending plus it has the lyrics refereing to a person in quite a problematic situation which raised my attention. The song got me that much that I watched it again and again and a while afterwards bought the "Hanging in the balance" album for a cheap price, followed up by the "Blessings in disguise" album on which you can find the song "Badlands" as a import CD for a fairly high price. Anyway, both CD's were quite worth the price I paid.

If you want to check them out, do so with the song "Fake Healer" I found on their official myspace page It's from the same album that "Badlands" can be found but has a bit more of the usuallly more rawer side the band mostly sticks to.

Fake Healer
