Corners Of Sanctuary offer rough & dirty new material on Gatefold LP

The new material the Philadelphia based traditional metallers have put out this year feels like being more on point. The sounds are heavier, hard-hitting and they feel like a layer of darkness has been added to the overall sound structures.

The year-long release reign finishes with a chance for a vinyl album.

Anyway the songs didn't flew in as one release but have been distributed as two EPs called Blood and Steel Volume One and Two. Now the time has come to finish the move with a decent album "Blood and Steel: Fight Till the End".

This installment combines Volumes One and Two plus additional tracks completing the year long journey. The fine thing is that besides the digital release and a CD this particular one has the chance to come as a vinyl LP into your hands.

Currently 100 units are on offer as a 150g Black gatefold vinyl through a pre-order page of RFL Records.

This format feels different and I think its suits very well to the sound Corners Of Sanctuary are working on so it would add a rougher and more dirty tone to your listening enjoyment.

The newest video “Into the Night (I Still Remember)” reflects to what I've written above. Besides the sound it's also the video that kicks me so heavy into their music.

Finally you can also see them live in 2022 if that's the best experience for you.

EP Review: Out Of Darkness - Seize The Day (Modern Metal, 2020)

Brent Smedley is widely known as the longtime drummer of Iced Earth. I was surprised to learn that he has a side-project with vocalist/guitarist Eric Barrios called Out Of Darkness. The seven songs that he has put out via Bandcamp are heavy music no question. But they are far more.

Can the release shed some light into your day?

They offer a look outside of the box. The opener "OH MY" already spreads this open mindness. Other tracks like "I surrender" are heavier material with a very modern metal take to the sound. I disliked the high-toned sound. It's way to harsh in my ears.

Happily it's not the common sound of the release. The title-track "Seize the day" features rough vocals but riffs lighter through the speakers. It's going more into the groove metal style. It's also modern but not stressing my nerves like so many modern releases only going for brutality.

"KNTRL" varies between direct and straight metal notes and more vocal heavyness. I like the moments when it's lighter with melodies flying around. My favorite of the EP since it has a slightly calming effect on me.

A ballad is also present of this first attempt. It's called "Freedom to be free" and shines with spoken elements at the proper moments. But the refrain is big and massive as you would expect of such a track with multiple vocal layers as a special in here.

Finally a midtemp song closes the package. It's riffs keep it compact and and the duration short so it may have been the last ideas the guys had at the rehearsals. Anyway it shows that this is a release of the moment - a authentic one.

All in all a solid release that opened my ears. The former duo surely has ambitions and I'm curious to see where this project may go to in the future. The album is available as download or CD on Bandcamp.

EP Review: Wax Mekanix / Troll Teeth - Blunt Split EP (Rock, Exmerimentation 2021)

I like thie music direction that the songs spread that Wax Mekanix contributes to this digital only release.

The songs sound fresh. The music denies to be pressed into a single folder. Instead it always changes into the directions that fits to the mood of the moment.

This EP features songs "In Stereo" as the sign promises.

Already the opener "Head" will please all Rock fans out there that are open-minded. It rocks without any fears or negativity on the mind straight away. It's unusual refrain and message will stick in many heads for a long time. It even invites to dance to it in a typical rock club. The never ending lyrics give it a feeling of a wire that winds into the endless.

The second contribution "Manchester Strawberry Blonde" feels more like a intermission. It's more of vocals mixed up with a drum pattern. The voice sounds out of a total different direction and some female voice breaks in at the beginning. Finally it fades with the tonality of the beginning. Not my favorite but for sure a nice experiment.

My favorite after some re-listening sessions turned out to be "Freak Boutique". The hacked way the riff goes and stops always jumps into my ears. It invites to listen closer and just let yourselves join the good vibes this one spreads. Good rocking stuff with unusual structure that just makes me even more curious on what Wax Mekanix hopefully has to offer in the future.

The songs that Troll Teeth recorded for this Split EP are of a total different direction. They belong to the total epic exerimentation field and didn't found my sympathy. I disliked all the high tonality and the raw and edgy sounds they present to the listener but it's for sure a highlight to those seeking something out of the ordinary music catalog.

The EP is available as a download for 5 USD on the Bandcamp page of Electric Talon Records.

Single Review: October Thorns - Circle Game (1999/2021, Progressive Rock)

Some bands remain a legend. Also their lifespan may have been short they are often going round in the heads and hearts of music fans for a long time.

It must have been like this with the band October Thorns, a progressive rock band that formed in 1999.  They only released one six track demo but that particular one had great reviews in international megazines like Aardshock and Germany‘s Heavy Oder Was?

The cover of the first single already gives a thought that something unusual hides here.

The line-up had members with them that should put a mark in other bands at a later time frame.

Vocalist Paul LaPlaca went on to play with Chris Caffery (Savatage/Trans-Siberian Orchestra), Ted Poley (Danger Danger), Carnivore AD and currently plays with Drift Into Black, while bassist David Z went on to make a name for himself with Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Joan Jett, Jeff Scott Soto, and his own band, ZO2. On July 14,  2017, David Z was tragically killed in a vehicle crash while on tour with Adrenaline Mob.

These days a re-worked (remixed and remastered) version of the demo along with bonus material is on it's way to be released in 2022. We at the Heavy Metal Underdogs blog were fortune enough to have a listen to the first single "Circle Game" and were impressed by the blow-away feeling it shares.

The first single "Circle Game" starts dreamlike with some guitar notes flying around with percussion adding to the atmosphere. Only seconds later the music explodes into a bright stream of pushing frequency. Gentle guitars touch the listeners ears with straight vocals writing the story. It's fine to hear the sound doesn't get overloaded also the solo section expands the volume of the highlighted music instruments. The vocals are partly multi-layered. I think this wasn't a standard in 1999 so it's a surprise to hear. The layering is set at proper moments so it adds to climatic moments of the sound and doesn't get on the nerves of the listener. The powerful end marks a sign in the mind to keep a eye on this release in the future.

You can listen to "Circle Game" for yourselves on digital streaming platforms listed up on this link.

In addition to “Circle Game,” the full album will include unreleased mixes of the songs “Leviathan” and “Sounds of Life,” as well as unheard demo tracks. It's set for release in 2022 through Divebomb Records.

Make sure to follow the band on Social Media so you won't miss this long lost gem.

Female hijab-wearing metal band to tour Europe November 2021

Some time ago we had a talk here if wearing hijab and playing metal is a fitting combination. A trio of women from Indonesia is brave enough to share the love for heavy music and staying true to their beliefs at the same time. They formed Voice of Baceprot and gained attention with playing covers of well known songs of acts like Rage against the machine.

Soon the band will head over to Europe to perform a limited number of shows at the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Switzerland beginning November 28th and going through December 10th.

Make sure to see them - I think this is a rare opportunity to see them live.

The dates of the 2021 European tour of Voice Of Baceprot.

If you've not heard them yet here is a teaser to their sound.

How is it to open up as power metallers for Soulfly ?

Well Niviane are a power metal combo. The sound they produce is a fest to all the die hards of the genre out there. Besides all the known trademarks the sound is enriched with heavier riffs than the usual and a voice calling out to the dedicated listener that throws a closer ear on all the details.

Live pictures of the power metal band Niviane.

Niviane send over a report that shares some of the past touring memories the band was able to collect on the U.S. tour.

Guitarist Gary Tarplee comments:

"On August 18, 2021, we departed Sacramento’s Rehearse America to embark on a 15 date onslaught of the Mid-West and East Coast with the legendary Soulfly. We are pretty well-known here in Northern California, but going out on tour with Soulfly into states that we’ve never been to, we were the “unknowns”.

We kicked off the tour in Albuquerque, New Mexico and delivered our brand of metal to a venue filled with people to see Soulfly. People were curious as to who was this band “Niviane” that’s out on tour with Soulfly.

We would take the stage, look into the crowd and most times see the look on peoples faces like “who are these guys“ and “what do they have to deliver“?

Night after night within a couple of minutes of the opening song, The Ruthless Divine, the crowds facial expression would change, we could see people getting into the music, raising their fists in the air and chanting along when prompted.

By the middle of our set, the crowds were pumped and into us. Night after night, we were just getting tighter and tighter. Playing to sold out venues in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Wichita, Kansas. Playing in Fort Wayne, Indiana to 1200 people on a Thursday night, sharing the stage with the Butcher Babies at a festival in West Virginia and playing in New York City at the Gramercy Theater were all incredible experiences.

We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to have been able to take our brand of metal across the United States, meet new friends, make new fans and create memories that will last a lifetime!"

Check out the band's sound for yourselves and you'll quickly get a idea that being the opener surely is not a easy job on such a package. The website of the band holds more detailed info on the band.

New Nightstalker comic book and music album see the light of day

We already had a word here on The Nightstalker story universe. It's a plot about a mysterious hunter whose actions aren't always clear.

He seems to be involved into events like a murder but his role remains unclear. The whole story can be experienced through multiple media releases in form of music, movie and now two new options have become available.

A overlook on some of the media available in The Nightstalker line.

The cool thing is that you can play a part of the story as a tabletop roleplaying game. I don't think I've come along a underground production that offers such a thing. If you're into experiencing unknown mysteries with your friends on a evening or two make sure to have a look into the free role book at Edition Stellarmaris to find out if it's for you (it's available in French language only).

But the even cooler thing is that a short chapter of the story also lives in form of a comic book. Since the whole package is a complex thing this one part is surely easier to understand if you're new to the The Nightstalker universe. You can purchase it through Amazon but have a look inside first at the blog of Stellamaris editions.

In other news fresh music also has become available in this fascinating story universe. This time the project under the sign of "NIAC" put out a dark synth metal album that examines another part of the story and also discovers a new character.

CD Review: Inner Siege - Fury Of Ages (Power Metal,2021)

Had a good time on most of the album also some tracks shine brighter than others.

Colored vinyl and a printed jacket should please collectors.

The grand opening "Calling For Violence" surprised me quite well. Giving a midtempo punch it let's you come in slowly to the bands sound. The refrain calls for some scream along in live situations and it woke my interest to hear more of the "Fury Of Ages" album.

Happily "Reborn" track number two continues the good start. In contrast to the opener it changes more often throughout it's duration. The song keeps a constant riffing as a base but adds slight moments of excitement in. High screams and well placed guitar intermezzos shine.

"Firewind" speeds it all up. I'm glad to hear the cranking up doesn't ruin the sound. It's kept straight foward and the joy-factor intact. Keep the volume adjustment low, this feels great on moderate level.

Some guitar wizardy is shown on the short intermezzo "Virtuos Iniquity" before "Echoes Into Eternity" let's a high scream out. Being a good riff shooter this let's us headbang further and mixes some midtempo stop-overs into it's passages - something I love to hear.

"World Of Darkness" is a solid track but didn't resonate so well than the previous songs. Same goes for "Power.Metal.Glory" also sure it has a great refrain with it.

I love to hear the band from the United States keeps the sound on a more clear tone most of the time also on some moments I'd like to have less high tones in the sound. "Iron Lotus" is a negative example for that. I got on my nerves with the many solo sections on it.

On "Stronghold" parallels to the great band Hammerfall come to my mind. It has a more narrative way of speaking to the audience and the refrain rushes into my heart quickly. Some high screams are placed well.

The album becomes more direct and on-point soundwise when the album comes towards the end. The tenth track "Hero" and the closing riffer "World on fire" are such tracks. The vocals are variable and you feel they have been painfully worked on many times but the result should make all headbangers out there happy.

The album is available as a CD as well as colored vinyl with lyrics-printed jacket. Please check out one song below and consider a purchase to increase touring chances for these guys.

Buckler & Fury take us to a Fuck show

This track suprises with it's soft acoustic start. No one would expect something like this with such a song title.

The video of Buckler&Fury is a unexpected surprise to me.

But it all fits so well together. The verses and words start to come and go and so the music slowly crawls into my mind.

It's just a blink of the eye before the crushing heavyness starts to come in and shows it's raw power. It all falls back to the silk state and the game begins again.

Finally it all comes to it's eruption with the refrain having lots of repeats but this feels not boring but great. Make sure to check the guys out on Facebook. I hope there'll be more of this also.

I like the way the track builds up. Starting with slight sound it explodes at the proper moments. The refrain sinks in quickly. I was singing along to it. The video is also a bit different in the optics which is great to see.

EP Review: Lady Beast - Omens (Power Metal, 2021)

Are musicians always in need of a big budget to get something great done ? The brand new Lady Beast EP has a basic sound but not a big production behind it.

The cover invites to think about it's meaning.

Nevertheless the band put together great songs. They feel like very different parts flow into each other without cutting edges.

The music also feels outworked more - take the vocals as example. They are more fine tuned this time and often show many different aspects and approach on high singing in a different way compared to similar material of other bands.

In fact I have to listen to these songs multiple times to fully get inside. That surprised me a bit. The good side is that it didn't kick me away at first listen so I kept trying another time and was rewarded with the discovery of the mentioned refined work on their music.

If you're into classic power metal you'll quickly get this started but it will do something with you. Maybe you'll feel the way I did - thinking wow - this is somewhat different than music I've heard before. This goes especially for the songs "Blood For Blood" and "Kill The King".

The guitar solos go deeper. They are highlighted through a significant higher toned sound and stand out of the sound. It's like this on all of the songs of this EP.

Hijabs and heavy music - does this fit together ?

We often forget how important freedom of speech is. It may seem neglectable at times but think for yourselves. There are regions in the world that don't allow to express yourselves the way you want. This is a fact - sad as it is.

So I was more than surprised to hear of the all female hijab-wearing band called Voice Of Baceprot. They are an Indonesian rock combo formed in Garut, West Java in 2014.

Voice Of Baceprot create heavy music and stay true to their roots and believes.

They have a new single coming up called "God allow me (please) to play music". Having been given the chance to have a early listen to the track it got me with it's rough hacking riff starting the track plus it's slightly broken timing in it. Rage Against The Machine comes to my mind - that's my favorite voice of revolution.
The guitars change from harsh toning to softer one's flying through the whole track duration. The music lives of this contrast.

But inside the rough shell a beautiful soft toned voice send the message towards the listener. It carefully builds the mood of the song. There are balanced parts, long held vocal notes and finally those calling it all out into the world. The single finally explodes into a wide refrain that hopefully will unite all music fans no matter where they come from.

The song speaks of the right to create music and to believe in god.
We want people who listen to this song to become more tolerant towards others. God does not belong to just one person or one group of people. God belongs to anyone who believes in Him. So, everyone has a right to be creative, create, and take responsibility for their creations given by the God that he or she believes in,” Marsya (Voclas, Guitar) of the band comments on the track.

"God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music” will be available on all digital streaming platforms starting from August 17, 2021.

Make sure to keep a eye on the band's channels for the exact link to the song.

The group has been confirmed to play Wacken Open Air 2022. They will play alongside headliners Slipknot, Judas Priest, Rammstein’s Till Lindemann and more, at the event, scheduled to run from August 4 - August 8, 2022.

Album Review: Herman Rarebell - Nip In The Bud (1981/2021 Hard Rock)

Did you know that Herman Rarebell (the longtime former drummer of The Scorpions) recorded a solo record 40 years ago ? Neither did I. The bigger was the fun of having the chance to listen to this gem in a remastered version of "Nip In The Bud" now.

The artwork was created by Storm Thorgerson’s team at Hipgnosis.

The sound on the album sticks to a compact yet pressure-filled structure. From the eleven tracks on offer "Rock your all" stands out with it's broken riff structures. It's a typical rocker going straight but the riffs present it a ear-splitting way. What a wild song!

"Triangle" follows on this route. It's a more rhythm-oriented number with drums being dominant and the guitar following a shredding way. The last third plays with effects. You won't get this out of your head too fast once listented to it.

"Slob" presents a wild and vicious voice rocking out a similar way Brian Johnson does in AC/DC. The instrumental side is more of a slightly inconstant drum pattern mixed with a direct riff attack.

The journey continues with more of this. "Junk Funk" comes around put together in a jam session. You can feel the spontaneous vibe of the moment it may have been created. I love to hear such elements - it's hardly ever spotable on albums.

A typical stomper follows. This may be a track a bit closer to typical Scorpions songwriting so it's food that appeals to more people. It's still rude enough so don't think of any commercial song in here.

Track nine introduces more riff-fun all the way. I think it may have been done the direct and fast way, too. It's a no-pain track in three minutes duration spreading fun all the way.

Finally it's time to listen to "I'll say goodbye". As the name suggests it comes with a more hymm like format. It's not in a sad way. It's more of remembering good times in a "glad to have had it" style. The fade out keeps hope for a continue some other day.

The remastered version will be available through Aviator Management on August 27th 2021. A pre-save link for the album is also available if you want to have it in your digital collection the day it comes out. Have a little pre-listen with the single "Rock you all" and keep in contact with Herman Rarebell through Facebook.

Sense Of Fear shot a new single out of nowhere

Sense of Fear is one of the oldest active heavy metal bands based in Northern Greece. I know they had a lot of trouble getting the first releases ( a EP and their full-length album titled "As the Ages passing by") together which took them a long time to get it all done. In fact they have my deepest respect that they sticked to what they wanted to archive no matter how bad things went.

So today I was very surprised to find the newest single in my inbox. The music also goes a fast and straight forward route taking a more thrashy style this time. If you're after something going straight for the kill - this track has it all.

But soundwise it also comes with specials in it. The vocals are held a bit in the background but step to the front at the proper moments. It feels balanced this way for me but may sound strange at the first listening round.

No one can tell what the future holds. Maybe more is to come, maybe not - I think we'll have to stay in connection with Sense of Fear to find out.

Cassidy Paris kicks you out of sorrow with Wannabe single

Music has the power to get me through difficult times. This single is a fine example on how this works.

The coverart for the new Cassidy Paris output "Wannabe".

It's foundation is based on a pumping solid rock 'n' roll riff that's ready to explode like octane. It's mixed along with a smooth rhythm section that gives me a positive push. But all of this comes to a boil when the vocals come touching in.

In the beginning it's going all easy with verses going step by step. But wait until the refrain starts. I bet you won't get this out of your mind once heard.

Finally it's also material to shake your legs to it so that's prove it's pure Rock 'n' Roll. Make sure to follow Cassidy Paris as she and the band move further to the next steps. A EP called "FLIRT" is said to come out September 1st 2021.

Besides all the fun the music spreads the lyric content inside speaks out a serious message as vocalist Cassidy Paris explains: "It focuses on the obsession today’s youth has on popularity and how they are willing to sacrifice their friendships and integrity. The youth of today are not able to be original. They all want to be Tik Tok or You Tube Stars.  I have never really understood how people can fake friendships. Talentless people are trying to become famous for doing nothing at all”.  Yet it was a pattern that was becoming all too familiar, Cassidy explains about the inspiration behind the song. “This song is how people fall into the pattern of becoming followers and focussed on materialistic possessions and fame”.

Album Review: Ravenoir - Dark Wings of Eternal Blasphemy (Death Thrash Metal, 2020)

It's a production with a very own idea of how it should vibrate through your speakers. The sound centers more on the performance of the riffs and gives it a extra kick through the deep heavyness of the drums.

The drums accompany close to the guitars. Vocals are set to dominate the sound. It would have been great to push the voice a bit more to the background in the mix but sure purists will prefer it to be like this.

The album starts with "Ravenoir". A typical rough riding riff thrasher but one with some fine notes. The ending holds some keyboard-notes that surprised me to hear. Well done!

Full speed riffs are coming your way on the second offer, the title track of the record. It's boldly presented with a bright chorus giving a push. You can feel the massiveness of the track in every second.

"In The Sign of the Horns" continues this bold attempt but puts the guitars a bit back into the background and set's the vocals to the very front.

it's followed by a surprise track. "From The Shadows of the Dead" is a laid back, slower instrumental intermission spreading lots of dark and deadly atmosphere. It's a welcomed way of taking a break from the riff-fest going on.

"Dark Vision" shows the ability of Ravenoir to put out pressure-filled songs in a midtempo pattern.

It's a typical death metal record mixed up with fine thrash elements. I think traditional metal people will love this. Listen to the song "Hellfire icon" below and you'll get a idea of it.

The album is available through Gothoom Shop as jewel case CD, USB stick and in a CD & Shirt bundle.

Samhain (early Danzig) tribute album on the way

Tribute albums can be a sweet thing. I remember the two records that were put out titled "A Tribute to Judas Priest - Legends of Metal" on Century Media. They presented fine new interpretations of well known material. But do underground legends get the same treatment ? This one seems to be one of the rare ones being around throwing a light on Danzig's early footsteps.

"World Without End: An Underground Tribute to Samhain" out on July 9th 2021.

From a curatorial perspective, Black Donut Records seeks to shed some well-deserved love on an act regrettably neglected by the fickle tides of fame and fortune. Wedged in the timeline between the beloved horror-punk of Misfits and the blusier doom of Danzig, the legacy of the ghoulish Samhain has been regrettably lost in the fray. Their catalog has been out of print for decades, and is unavailable on streaming services - a death knell in the modern era, if e’er there was. With the small-yet-dedicated fandom left to scrounge YouTube’s dark corners for a modicum of access to their discography, the unfortunately inaccessible Samhain are long overdue for some attention.

While the bands collected herein deliver a wide array of sonic styles and aesthetic approaches, a singular passion and an instantly recognizable rough ‘n’ tumble Samhain spirit serves as the glue that holds the compilation together. Take, for example, Night Goat’s bombastically highoctane take on “Moribund,” DemonScar’s faithfully gritty “November’s Fire,” or Spellgrinder’s slick and sleazy interpretation of the intrinsically jubilant “All Murder, All Guts, All Fun.” A project larger, by default, than the sum of its component parts, this compilation will undoubtedly appeal to any fan who holds the source material in high regard.

KKs Priest calls us to keep music alive and kicking

In these times we're living in it's quite easy to give up. So much seems to be lost and down. So I'm glad to see and hear that KKs Priest gives us a call not to let it all go to waste what we all love and believe in so much.

The title track of the upcoming album has already been revealed.
"Stick further to the music and keep the flame burning" this video talks to me.

Musically this track stems from all the classic material we all know but holds the power and pressure tight 'til the last second. The vocals Ripper Owens performs feel very concentrated and to the point without going on one's nerves with too many high notes. The more classic sort of production without overload on noise adds to the positive feedback the title track calls in me.
The release of the Sermons Of The Sinner album via Explorer1 Music Group/EX1 Records will come on August 20. Fans are able to pre-order the debut album in various configurations including an exclusive limited edition autographed Metal Vinyl (Silver Disc) with bonus CD Album, via the band’s online store here: https://found.ee/KKsPriest. The album can be pre-saved via all global digital streaming partners as well.

With Downing on guitar, KK’s PRIEST also features ex-Judas Priest member Tim “Ripper” Owens on vocals, who fronted the band for eight years and recorded two studio albums, Jugulator, featuring the GRAMMY® nominated track “Bullet Train,” and Demolition, plus two live albums.

They are joined by Tony Newton (Voodoo Six) on bass, A.J. Mills (Hostile) on guitar and Sean Elg (DeathRiders/Cage) on drums. Original drummer, Les Binks, unfortunately sustained a wrist injury, but will make special guest live appearances when the band tours.

KK’S PRIEST is set to tour worldwide as soon as current restrictions are lifted. Details of touring to be announced.

JamArt shares mystic metal with Wanted Dead single

This is music the way I would like to write it myselves.

The cover by WormRot adds to the mystical atmosphere of the music.

The single takes you from rough, dirty riffing stages over to midtempo and crawling material. Finally it sends you to a soft and dreaming place just before it erupts like a vulcano into a passage of raw thrashing.

The end comes like the start but with more details worked into the sound. The whole single comes in a compact sound shell that gives a thick sound feeling. All the sounds have been kept close to each other to give a strong atmosphere. Fine headbanger stuff in here.

Well, let's see what the album holds that's slated for a August 2021 release and is already up for pre-order through Rockpit Records. The tracklist reads as follows

Wanted dead
Cuxt
War King Cross
Public Killing
Disgrace
Djinn
Canvass Black
BanCkull

Breathtaking proggers Acolyte to livestream from Chapel off Chapel

All bands add a lot to the music cosmos. But having had a ear on the single "Entropy" of Acolyte took my breathe. What I heard was pure crying from the very depths of the soul.

It's not happening often that I can hear the heartbeat of a band but Acolyte provided this through their music to me. While most of the track comes a heavy way it's the transition towards a slow and dream/nightmare-like style at the end that never seems to end that got me in so deep.

And this very band is going to host a global streaming event at the intimate and iconic venue in Melbourne, 'Chapel off Chapel'. Acolyte's live performance guarantees a stunning, powerful and emotive musical experience that will bring their new songs to life in a live setting.

The interactive streaming event will premiere on SUNDAY JUNE 6TH 2021 [But will be available for rewatch] 9pm AEST/ 7pm AWST / 12pm BST/ 1pm CEST / 9am EDT

Tickets on sale now and there is a tiered pricing structure so fans can choose what they wish to pay to discover and experience the fast rising prog metal act. https://acolyte.veeps.com/

EP Review: Sirius - Wings of Fire (Heavy Metal / Power Metal)

A fine EP that is a good pick to party in it's first half and much more thought out in the second.

This band serves the power metal straight the way I like it. The opener "Wings of Fire" has a fine stomping bold midtempo rhythm and the riffs and vocals present the track as a solid start into a EP full of metal hymms. The "Shadow in my heart" builds upon a longer riff that winds through the whole track. Along with the drums this serves as a uplifting heavy rocker. The vox come down in strings that add a special note to this tune.

Next is "The Last Angel" - it's more complex than the previous two. It's riff is changing in tonality throughout the duration. The playing around with guitar effects dominates this one. Surely one for a re-listen. The last track already follows with "The Fury Within". It's once again deeper thought-out. The vocals wear a Judas Priest touch. A cool mixture of the easier first tunes of the EP but worked out wider into it's depth. This needs time to sink in and deserves more attention but I think it's great, too.

Make sure to pick a copy from Bandcamp for few bucks and follow the steps toward the first full album on Facebook.

Album Review: Wax Mekanix - Mobocracy (Rock, 2020)

Intensive from start to finish with many, many parts put inside. A well crafted sound collection not to be found that often out there.

Which record would you expect looking at the cover?

Wax Mekanix is an American musician, songwriter, performer, producer, and founding member of NWOBHM cult rockers Nitro. (Not to be confused with the Hollywood band).

In recent times he put out a brand new record. He can be heard on "Mobocracy" performing Lead and Backing vocals, Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Drums and Percussion.

The result surprised me least to say. It's a fully rocking release showing that music needs to be anything but one-sided. A breathe of fresh air went through my ears as I listened to this. It has more in mind with modern Rock sound. So many ideas have been put inside - all you need to be is a bit of opened minded to enjoy this.

Track by Track

Blood in my eyes starts the release with a rough rocker and has a wide calling refrain. It's a little bit rock radio compatible.

Victorious - goes in the easiest of the songs, rocks away, straight and surely a fest for fans of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Many repeats of the chorus towards the end - this may be a bit boring at times.

All Freaks rocks it out a more hacked way. The ripped riffs crawl out of the speakers, many guitar effects and experimentation but straight all in all.

Mad World comes with compressed guitars, different song structures than before, and a dizzy atmosphere. It needs closer listening, brightest sound so far.

Ghostland is a darker themed tune, much detail work on vox and guitars, sounds like one voice broken and burst into many different ones

Black unfolds as a acoustic ballad, deeply touching, tells a great tale of all the lifes grey zones, voice transport so much of it's content, guitar drums-great!

All in all it's anything but a casual record. It's not too long in duration but the content provided is so intensive that running it a second time and even more reveals more and more of the many details worked in.

This surely has taken it's time and effort to put together so it's well worth a purchase in one of the many packages with fine merchandise attached to the music (also the tracks are available as download alone) on Bandcamp.

The artwork stands out. The unsharp optic and the use of red color at the front may seem strange at first sight but it packages the unusual music performance of the record well.

The lyrics have been detailfully taken care of. I think I've not read so dedicated and own worded texts in a long time.

You can connect to Wax Mekanix on Facebook and Twitter Network to see how things move on.

CD Review: The L.A. Maybe - Dirty Damn Tricks (Rock 'n' Roll, 2021)

This band features Alvi Robinson on lead vocals who was one of only four singers to audition to replace Brian Johnson in AC/DC in 2016.

So what does this debut record have on offer ? "Mr. Danger" exactly does what the name suggests. He starts a brutal assault of rough guitar noise onto your ears. Be prepared this is a raw start into the record but spreads a cool vibe and groove with it. The "Sucker Punch" won't be less hard but has a bigger hook in it that will shake your legs on the first listen already. The singers abilities to scream out long remind me of early Rob Halford but even with a slightly higher note.

Track three "Oh Sugar" has a simpler riff but pushes with constant vocal attack. "She's reckless" is a full power midtempo rocker with basic groove. But beware this one grows in it's duration, from simple guitar background in the first parts to full volume tonality as the track moves further. "Peace of Mind" balances the album towards the middle giving a relaxed mood with free flying notes and lighter drumming. I love such moments in music.

Finally the album rocks it out properly and holds some nice surprises but most of all it is much fun for the listener. I've only picked out some highlights above to give you a proper idea. The other five tracks are nothing of a filler but I think this review shouldn't spoiler too much of the enjoyment of discovering a album.

The only downside is the overall massive production. It pushes the sound to the maximum but this can also be a bit of too much at times. Anyway, make sure to check out the band with the video above where they perform in a pinball bar.

Fans of AC/DC and Guns 'n' Roses can't go wrong with a purchase. Pick a copy at the band's shop as CD / signed CD / Vinyl album. They are also on Spotify if you like to add them to your library.

Chastain re-works old tracks to sound better

The music scene is a creative place. While things are troubled these days with the ongoing pandemic musicians resist to give up. Instead they constantly work on new ways to push on forwards.

Chastain re-worked some classic tracks for 1321.
In these case Chastain decided to breathe new life into some older cuts. The new effort 1321 takes tracks from each of the 5 albums the band released since 2013 with Leather Leone and presents them with different arrangements.

Guitarist and Producer David T. Chastain explains "1321 is the album we would have released if we only could have released one album during the Leather Second Generation Era. The tracks now are little more listener friendly and more accessible for the first time "Chastain" metal fan who may have never experienced the music before. For long time Chastain fans I believe they will like the new arrangements."

David adds, "We chose the tracks that we thought I could make the biggest arrangement changes from the originals. When listening to the 5 albums on their own certain tracks I could just hear a new arrangement that I thought would work. Tracks I could make stronger... or at least a new take on the song.

Also included on 1321 is the never before released track "The First Attack." That track was originally recorded during the "Surrender To No One" sessions but to due to time constraints was not inicluded on the original release.

This track "Evil awaits us" sounds far more straight forwards then I've heard the band before. The good thing is that the music quickly steps into the listeners ears but without losing the soul. All the dedicated detail work on the voice and the expression that comes with it keeps intact.

Please check out the homepage of Leviathan Records for a complete list of purchase links. http://www.leviathanrecords.com/1321.htm

Single Review: All Depraved - Makes me blind and insecure (Thrash, 2021)

This band coming from the Austrian Alps (Kärnten) kicks it out straight forward taking no prisoners.

Bandpicture of the band All Depraved, Photo Credit: Tom of All Depraved.
Sometimes when you get sends like this one it's hard to know what to expect. But this time a positive surprise came out of the bag. This gem which is yet to be released on May 2th 2021 features a frame of constant pushing drums provided by guest drummer Adrian Erlandsson (At The Gates, The Haunted).

The air is filled with classic razor sharp thrash riffs that cut straight and direct. At the same time they feel slightly layered at some points which gives it it fuller sound structure.

The vocals go a slightly growling way. Happily they don't go too deep so they are understandable. That's a big pro in my ears because it gives the refrain a hugh push and together with all the backing vocals it builds up to be a ear catcher.

The whole song takes a turn when it changes to the solo section. I love those midtempo changes, it gives a new view on the main riff of the track and a chance for all those who love to headbang like a propeller.

This track works fine as a introduction. It also leaves me asking how the other songs the band is working on may sound like. "Makes me blind and insecure" will be released on all streaming plattforms on May 2nd 2021.

Be sure to connect to the band on Facebook and YouTube to get a reminder of the single release.

A full album is about to follow sometime in 2021, too.

Anfitrite offer EP for very fair price to backers

Some bands can deliver a broken sensible sound with their music. I've found out that the symphonic gothic metal band Anfitrite set's a breathtaking feeling when it comes to calming your mind down.

The beautiful artwork accompanies to the music of Anfitrite.

Recently they've released a teaser of the track "Helena de Troya" and it gave me a moment of well-feeling in all the rushing times we're living in. A fine moment of being balanced.

Besides this the project needs your support to finish their upcoming EP. This is due to the serious political, economic and social crisis that Venezuela is suffering at the moment, making it very difficult to complete the EP by their own means.

Starting with a small price of just 3 dollar the band offers a digital copy of the songs with artwork along with the booklet to be send directly to your E-Mail inbox. But of course you're invited to give a higher amount if you can spare more with them. The EP will also be available later as a limited edition CD and USB stick.

You can directly access the campaign page on Ko-Fi.

Make sure to see the band's homepage and Facebook site for additional information.

Revealed: The unknown singer who almost replaced Bon Scott in AC/DC

Who auditioned back in the day to fill the vacant slot Bon Scott left behind ? Well not much has been lifted of that period of the Australian Rockers. I got this cool story article that talks with the man who nearly got the slot. But moreover it shows how the story went on after he didn't made it. Rock 'n' Roll still writes some of the most surprising stories with many twist and turns.

It has been written by Rock Candy author Hojo and is taken of the latest issue number 25 of the Rock Candy magazine. You can order the print magazine directly at www.rockcandymag.com Each copy purchased online comes with a free download in pdf format.

The front cover of Rock Candy issue 25.
In the latest issue of Rock Candy Magazine editor HoJo interviews the man who almost replaced legendary AC/DC frontman Bon Scott after the singer’s untimely death in 1980.

Steve Burton was an unknown vocalist in Birmingham, England, earning a living working as a roadie for a number of bands, including Judas Priest. Two roadie friends from Birmingham, Terry Lee and Keith Evans, were working for AC/DC – Terry as lighting director and Keith as Angus Young’s guitar tech. When Bon died on 19 February 1980 both suggested ‘Burtie’ for the vacant vocalist’s slot.

“I went down to London to audition for the band,” Burtie confirms in the Rock Candy Mag interview. “I got along fine with everyone and thought I did well, but for whatever reason I didn’t get the gig and it went to Brian Johnson, of course. But I must have made an impression on the band, because soon afterwards I got a call asking if I’d be interested in working with Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew, Stevie. He was putting a new band together in Birmingham and Malcolm had told him he should get hold of me.”

Stevie and Burtie ended up forming Starfighters, and within three months the band was offered the support slot on the UK leg of AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ tour. Malcolm was so impressed with the group that he ended up working with Starfighters on a demo that led to the band signing to Jive Records.

“We played the last show of the tour at the Victoria Apollo Theatre in London,” recalls Burtie. “And as soon as AC/DC had finished their set Malcolm came off stage, towelled himself down, threw his jacket on and jumped in the minibus with us. We went straight to Morgan Studios in Willesden and from 11 o’clock at night until nine the next morning we recorded with Malcolm helping us out. We did two songs, ‘Alley Cat Blues’ and ‘Rock ’Em Dead’, and those two songs got us signed to Jive.”

Starfighters recorded two albums for Jive, ‘Starfighters’ in 1981 and ‘In-Flight Movie’ in 1982, but success proved elusive and the group soon split. “I’d given up everything for the band,” says Burtie. “Because you know how it is. You’re on your way to stardom, you’re going to settle in America, all that stuff. I ended up working in my mate’s caff in Birmingham for two years flipping burgers!”

The singer isn’t bitter, though, despite his former bandmate Stevie Young having gone on to replace Malcolm in AC/DC back in 2014. “I’ve never been jealous of anyone’s success,” says Burtie. “Whatever happens in life you’ve got to carry on, whether it be playing in a band or shovelling sh*t all day.” Read this, and many other fascinating stories – including how Ronnie James Dio nearly joined glam rock band Sweet – in issue 25 of Rock Candy Mag.

EP Review: Kilter - Sys (Instrumental Jazz Metal, 2021)

Some bands really dare to go new ways. That's what came to my mind as I heard the newest output of brooklyn-based band Kilter.

While the basics of the three tracks on this one source of solid groove taken of the Jazz genre, it's the build-up that opens my ears so wide. "Sentinent Robotics" for instance plays around with wild bass and saxophone riffing. The segments come out in little potions and evolve over the tracks duration. But what I love most to hear is that the elements talk between each other. It's going back and forth but never loses it's line so the music keeps track- and enjoyabile.

Most of all the sound adds to the experience. It's clear and direct. You can easily spot all elements and enjoy them. It's a variable release. "The Turing Test" is much slower creeping through your speakers but builds with every second passing. The middle part consists of fat grooves going hand in hand with the songs theme. Fine detail work towards the end.

"Mind-Body Problem" forms the last and longest one. Experimenting with saxophone noise the beginning already introduces a unusual song. It keeps going this way but adds a nice bass riff in the background to finally explode a little bit into a float of saxophone noise experimentation.

If you're open to something new and sounding so much different try Kilter. They don't serve the usual but wake your ears for fresh sound. The trailer has some snippets of the release that is expected to drop on June 25th 2021.

Make sure to pre-order this gem through the Bandcamp page of Kilter or pre-save it to your Spotify library.

Share new Blameshift video for a chance to win a PRS Guitar

If you share this video of the US powerhouse Blameshift on YouTube you're in for a special treat. The band is raffling a handpainted PRS guitar among all those who participate. Be quick this only lasts 'til end of this month (March 2021).
This is how the guitar looks like.

As for the music: the song is a fine tuned track that combines straight rock patterns and riffing with female vocals that emphasize on the proper timings when the music reaches it's highs and softer points. I like the catchy style without losing it's power or the needed pressure.

The band recorded more tunes in the meantime with Erik Ron (Godsmack, New Years Day, Panic! At The Disco) on the helm. Make sure to keep a eye on Facebook so you won't miss out on what's to come.

EP Review. Incursion - The Hunter (2020, Trad Metal)

A traditional metal release that reminds me of classic Judas Priest days (Screaming for vengeance) with slight thrash metal riffs every here and there.

This one goes in straight, grooves out a lot. It's not too hard soundwise so the listening is more of joy than having to fight through rough notes. Yet in all the riff-blasting there are breaks every here and there that bring in some fresh wind into the direct sound. It's mostly guitar-driven with a slighty edge on playing the six strings. "Warrior of Destruction" is a good example for this.

"Guiding Faith" shows the band's ability to go for more epic songwriting. The opening riff is already bolder and the song changes far more in it's duration. But don't worry the next track "Fade to black" already pumps in more heavyness and goes in straighter with more speed. It's high vocal screams are outstanding!

"Kingdom of the dead" is a riff-hacker and speed-run. This spreads out a lot of fun and feels like a reminder to thrash days. It doesn't fiddle around and that's what I love so much. Sounds great!

All in all this feels like a journey that has many stations in it. A travel through a rich landescape of metal riffs.

Metal lovers need to have this - but make sure to be a friend of the high notes. They occur often so you need to feel fine with them. It's available on Bandcamp as download, CD and vinyl (sadly the orange one is already sold out).
